There’s a lovely moon tonight…

According to my various calendar subscriptions in my google calendar, today is when the Japanese celebrate the Autumnal equinox, and also tonight’s moon doesn’t just look full, it IS full. It’s been low on the horizon the last couple of nights, and visible as I was driving home from the office, looming large and looking yellow like the delicious cheese we used to believe it was made of.

If you thought this post was about the moon though, I must disappoint you. I can only wax poetic about the moon so many times in my life, and I already wrote a poem about the moon about 10 years ago.

Tonight, I’m writing about pets.  I don’t have any pets right now. It feels strange sometimes, because it’s the first time in my life I haven’t had any pets since I was 3 years old. I adore them, but after becoming a mother and looking after a baby and pets and a husband all at the same time, I got rather burned out. For now my free time is my own, except when I choose to share it, and I like it that way.

Still, I enjoy hanging out with my friends’ pets. So, here are some of the pets I enjoy hanging out with:

Janus, whose caretaker I hang out with fairly frequently these days, is an affectionate and very social cat. I was inordinately pleased when he seemed to take a shine to me. Janus is a drive-by petter. He’s one of those cats that prefers to keep moving, and sometimes enjoys trying to get you to chase after him. I was rather bewildered and somewhat hurt when he started yowling and hissing at me until I eventually realized that this was his way of demanding that I play with him. “Pick up the string and flick it around, woman! Do my bidding, or else!” Yes sir! I have now been well trained, and will wield the string on command.

Every once in a while, he’ll honor me by curling up on my chest. SO adorable.

Next up, we have Callie. Callie is an adorable Corgi whose caretaker is another good friend of mine. I’ve known her for a couple of years now, and have one very important thing to note: She is beautiful, and far more photogenic than I am. (In fact, I look better if she’s in the picture with me. Seriously.) Happily, Callie adores me back, and is always happy and excited to see me. She’s also much more willing to pose for photos than the ever-in-motion Janus.

I mentioned she’s gorgeous, right? She’s sweet too, and highly sociable. She’s often found at parties and gatherings held in my home… and is usually the hit of the party.

Recently, I visited another friend and got to meet their new kitten, Omi. Omi was the first creature I’ve encountered in the last 5 years who made me miss having pets of my own. Not only was he instantly friendly, he also had one of the loudest purrs I’ve heard in a long time. He let me pick him up, and he also came and lay down on my chest for a while with his loud rumbling purr. His caretaker said she’s thinking he might make a good therapy cat when he gets older, and I very much agree. I found him good therapy already!

Omi lives in a two-cat home! And the second kitten is also adorable, so I had to include this picture of Lily here:

Aside from my friend’s pets, I also enjoy the random pets I encounter sometimes. This small puppy that someone brought to a Fanime meeting was absolutely adorable.

For now, I’m still content to enjoy other people’s pets. I’m hoping one day the burnout will wear off and I’ll decide to become a pet caretaker again myself. Kitties and puppies are both awesome!

For those who were expecting moon-speak… here’s the poem I wrote forever ago. It isn’t good… nor properly poetry, but here you are:

Moonlight Shadows
Across my soul
Soothing peace
My heart enfolds
Silver Enchantment
Flowing from the sky
Compelling lover and dreamers
To pay homage with their eyes
Soft contentment I feel
As though my beloved one were near
Pale glowing light
Holds at bay my many fears
Wondrous and lustrous pearl
Bringing magic to the night
Lovely and breathtaking
Beautiful in my sight

Awww, those are great pictures of Omi and Lily! Lily’s really captures what a sweet pile of fluff she is.

At 6 months, Omi’s already getting better socialized and calmer than he was when we first got him. Soon he’ll be visiting friends with us, and getting used to going places.

Ahh, yes. I am guessing playing with other people’s pets is kinda like being a grandmother: you get to enjoy them and give them back at the end of the day.
